Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has called for the creation of an additional state in the South East geopolitical zone to bring the region on equal footing with others across the country.
Governor Mbah made the appeal while hosting members of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review at the Government House, Enugu. The lawmakers were in the state ahead of the South East public hearing on the ongoing constitutional amendment, scheduled to hold at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.
In his remarks, the governor emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to adopt rotational presidency as a means of promoting equity, unity, and inclusiveness in governance. He also threw his weight behind the call for the establishment of state police, stressing that decentralizing security architecture is vital to improving public safety and tackling emerging threats more effectively.
According to Mbah, the constitutional review presents a unique opportunity to address long-standing imbalances and strengthen the foundation of national unity.
Earlier, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and leader of the delegation, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, said the committee was in Enugu to consult with stakeholders from the South East and gather their inputs to ensure the constitution reflects the collective aspirations of Nigerians.
