FG Declares July 15 Public Holiday in Honour of Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

This announcement follows the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as a tribute to the former leader’s legacy. The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who noted that the decision was made with the approval of President Tinubu.

According to Dr. Tunji-Ojo, the public holiday is a mark of national respect for Buhari’s lifelong service, dedication, and leadership in advancing Nigeria’s democratic development and unity.

> “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with integrity and unwavering commitment to national progress. This holiday is a time for all Nigerians to reflect on his legacy and the values he stood for,” the Minister stated.

Nigerians are encouraged to use the day to promote peace, unity, and patriotism—principles the late president consistently advocated throughout his time in office.

As part of the national mourning, the Nigerian flag will fly at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, through Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The Federal Government also extended condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the passing of a statesman who left a significant mark on the country’s history.
