The Federal Government has officially unveiled the burial arrangements for Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away recently in London. The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing held today in Abuja.
To ensure a smooth and dignified process, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has constituted a high-powered Inter-Ministerial Committee to oversee the state burial in collaboration with the Katsina State Government and the late President’s family.
The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, and comprises top cabinet members and security officials, including the Ministers of Finance, Defence, Works, Interior, FCT, Information, and others. The Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office will serve as the committee’s secretariat.
State Burial Activities and National Mourning
As Nigeria prepares to bid farewell to one of its most prominent leaders, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have been directed to proceed to Katsina State. They will participate in the funeral rites and remain in Daura for the Third-Day Prayers on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
In honour of the late statesman, President Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning beginning Sunday, July 13, 2025. During this period, flags will fly at half-mast across Nigeria. A public holiday has also been declared for Tuesday, July 15, 2025 to allow citizens to pay their respects.
Repatriation of Buhari’s Remains and Jana’iza Prayer
A high-level federal delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently in London to conclude formalities and arrangements for the repatriation of President Buhari’s remains, which are expected to arrive in Katsina by 12 noon on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, a military ceremony will be conducted at the airport. President Bola Tinubu will be on hand to personally receive the remains, which will then be transported to Daura for the Jana’iza (Islamic funeral prayer) and burial at the late President’s residence.
Condolence Registers and Global Tributes
President Tinubu has ordered that condolence registers be opened in all Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. Nigerian missions abroad have also been directed to open registers for international sympathizers.
Leaders from around the world continue to send messages of condolence, acknowledging President Buhari’s legacy and contributions to Nigeria and Africa at large.
FEC Meeting Rescheduled
Meanwhile, the Federal Executive Council meeting, originally set for Tuesday, July 15, has been rescheduled to Friday, July 18, to accommodate the funeral events.
The Federal Government calls on Nigerians to join in prayer and reflection during this solemn period and celebrate the life of a leader who dedicated decades to national service.
