The First Lady of Zamfara State, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, has been appointed as the National Secretary of the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC)—a coalition of Nigerian governors’ wives united in the fight against cancer through advocacy, policy reform, and community engagement.

The announcement was made in a statement by her Press Secretary, Hajiya Rabi’atu Yusuf, who described the appointment as a recognition of her outstanding contributions to cancer prevention and healthcare delivery in Zamfara and across Nigeria.

As FLAC Secretary, Hajiya Huriyya will work with other First Ladies across the country to intensify campaigns on cancer awareness, improve access to screening and treatment, and mobilize support for underserved communities.

Her appointment follows the FLAC Cancer Support Donation Ceremony recently held at the Imo State First Lady’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja. At the event, FLAC members discussed strategies to expand survivor services and promote early detection across Nigeria.

Under Hajiya Huriyya’s leadership, Zamfara State has achieved major milestones in public health, including free breast cancer screenings, statewide awareness programs, and full sponsorship of surgeries for over 100 cancer patients. Her personal donation of ₦3.5 million to support indigent patients further highlights her commitment to the cause.

As Secretary, she is expected to bring new energy to FLAC’s mission, drive inclusive healthcare policies, and expand support for cancer survivors. Her appointment also marks a stronger representation of Northern Nigeria in national cancer advocacy.

The Abuja event also featured donations to two key cancer support groups—Network of People Impacted by Cancer in Nigeria (NePICiN) and Health & Psychological Trust Center—reaffirming FLAC’s commitment to supporting patients and survivors.

The Chairperson of FLAC and First Lady of Imo State, Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma described the initiative as “a profound investment in life, dignity, and health equity.”

Other notable First Ladies present at the event included H.E. Lami Fintiri (Adamawa), H.E. Dr. Linda Ayade (Cross River), H.E. Monica Ugwuanyi (Enugu), H.E. Hajiya Zainab Idris (Kebbi), and H.E. Agyin Kefas (Taraba).

Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal’s elevation to a national role underscores her rising profile in health advocacy and Zamfara State’s growing leadership in women-led public health reform.
