President Honours Iconic Monarch’s Legacy of Integrity and Leadership
President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as a symbol of integrity, humility, and dedication to cultural values and national service.
Speaking during the eighth-day prayer held on Sunday, July 20, at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, President Tinubu praised the revered monarch for his unwavering principles and bold leadership.
“Nowhere can you find a better definition of Yoruba culture than in the life of the late Awujale. He was a leader who stood for truth, unity, and progress,” the President stated.
President Tinubu recalled the late monarch’s support throughout his political journey, including during his tenure as Lagos State Governor and ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
“He prayed for me and assured me of victory. I believe his blessings played a role in where I am today,” Tinubu added.
Highlighting the late Oba’s legacy, Tinubu urged Nigerians to uphold the values he stood for. “To honour him, we must promote unity and carry forward the spirit of service and integrity he embodied.”
The president also commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his respectful relationship with the late monarch, both in life and in death.
Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, praised Oba Adetona’s impactful reign of 65 years, noting his role in advancing development across Ijebuland and beyond.
Dignitaries at the event included governors, ministers, lawmakers, and traditional rulers. Notable attendees were Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, Lagos Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and several former governors.
Muslim clerics, led by Prof. Kamaldeen Balogun offered prayers, emphasizing the lasting impact of good deeds and righteous leadership.
Earlier in the day, President Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, visited the Igbeba Palace, where he offered prayers at the late monarch’s tomb and met privately with the royal family.
The President’s presence was widely praised as a significant gesture that underscored his deep respect and longstanding relationship with the Awujale.
