Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Shiroro Local Government Area following a tragic boat accident that claimed multiple lives and destroyed goods. The ill-fated boat was heading to the Zumba community market when it capsized, leading to yet another devastating incident in the riverine region.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described the incident as “unfortunate, disheartening, and deeply troubling.” He expressed concern over the recurring cases of boat mishaps in riverine communities, despite concerted efforts by federal and state agencies to curb the menace.
Governor Bago acknowledged the proactive interventions by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), including the Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), in addressing safety concerns in water transportation. However, he emphasized that his administration remains resolute and will not relent in implementing measures to protect lives and property along Niger State waterways.
The Governor appealed to residents of riverine communities to strictly adhere to safety regulations and guidelines during water travel, stressing that personal responsibility is crucial in preventing further tragedies.
He commended the swift response of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), local divers, and community volunteers who are working tirelessly in ongoing search and rescue operations.
Governor Bago extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured victims.
