The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in Nigeria. Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, announced this at a press briefing held at the Council’s headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, on August 4, 2025.

A total of 1,969,313 candidates sat for the exam from 23,554 schools across the country. Out of these, 38.32% (754,545 candidates) obtained credit passes in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics—a significant drop from 72.12% in 2024.

Despite logistical challenges and attempts to curb examination malpractice, WAEC successfully introduced Computer-Based WASSCE (CB-WASSCE), making Nigeria the first in West Africa to adopt this hybrid testing model. Candidates could choose between computer-based tests or traditional pen-and-paper formats.

Dr. Dangut revealed that 192,089 candidates’ results (9.75%) are currently being withheld over alleged involvement in examination malpractice. However, the Council is investigating these cases, with a pledge to maintain the integrity of its assessments.

He also announced the ongoing registration for the CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates, Second Series 2025, which will close on August 22, 2025. WAEC has launched digital platforms, including the WaecKonnect App, for easier access to resources like past questions, exam tips, and verification services.

Candidates can check their results on www.waecdirect.org, using the smart identity cards issued during the examination. WAEC also advised indebted State Governments to clear their outstanding fees to enable affected candidates access their results.

In his address, Dr. Dangut called on stakeholders, schools, and parents to support WAEC’s efforts in combating malpractice, while commending the cooperation of Federal and State Ministries of Education, security agencies, and the media for their support during the examination process.
