The Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the thespian reportedly passed away on Friday morning, just weeks before his 70th birthday. His demise was first announced in an Instagram post by popular filmmaker and journalist, Seun Oloketuyi, who wrote: “Popular actor, Segun Remi died Friday morning.”
Chief Kanran, known for his remarkable portrayal of wealthy and authoritative characters, began his professional acting career in 1975 and rose to prominence with his roles in Yoruba movies.
Mediaplusng.com reports that over the years, he featured in several classics such as Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala. He was widely celebrated for playing roles of kings, chiefs, and village elders, leaving a lasting legacy on stage and screen.
The veteran actor also made significant contributions to stage productions, notably taking on the title role in Kurunmi, a play by Prof. Ola Rotimi. He starred in Mirror in the Sun and Images, further cementing his presence in Nigerian television.
One of his biggest breakthroughs came with Langbodo, Nigeria’s official drama entry for Festac ’77, performed at the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. He also gained recognition for his portrayal of Alaafin Kanran in a drama aired on Lagos Television on October 1, 1988.
Chief Kanran’s death marks the end of an era in Nollywood, as tributes continue to pour in for the actor who entertained millions with his artistry and unforgettable performances.
