The Katsina State Government has announced the deployment of additional security forces to Malumfashi Local Government Area following a tragic attack in the Unguwan Mantau community, where 13 residents were killed during early morning prayers.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the victims were observing the Fajr prayer in a mosque when armed men stormed the community and opened fire. The attack was said to be reprisal by criminal elements after the villagers successfully repelled bandits two days earlier.
Reports indicate that the people of Unguwan Mantau had previously ambushed the bandits, rescued kidnapped victims from Ruwan Sanyi village, and recovered three motorcycles along with two AK-47 rifles. This bold action reportedly provoked the deadly counterattack.
Security agencies, including the Nigerian Army’s Forward Operating Base air component and the Nigerian Police Force, have since been deployed to the area to restore calm. Authorities said the joint operation will also flush out bandits who often take cover under crops during the rainy season to launch surprise attacks, Mediaplusng.com reports.
In a statement, the Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs praised the bravery of Unguwan Mantau residents while assuring that the government remains committed to defeating banditry. The government also extended heartfelt condolences to families of the victims and pledged stronger support for community-based security initiatives.
The tragic Malumfashi incident highlights the persistent threat of banditry in the North-West, as Katsina and neighbouring states continue to grapple with recurring attacks on rural communities.
