The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kebbi State Directorate, has issued a strong warning to communities living along River Goronyo and River Niger, urging immediate relocation to avoid the risk of devastating floods. The alert follows the planned release of water from nearby dams to protect their structural safety.
According to a report by Mediaplusng.com, the warning was contained in a statement released on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi by the Assistant Director and Head of Media and Communication, Larai Saminu Nazo. She explained that although the release of water is a preventive measure, it will cause a sharp rise in river levels, endangering flood-prone communities.
> “We cannot overstate the seriousness of this warning. The gradual release of water is essential to maintain dam safety, but it will inevitably increase water levels in the rivers,” Nazo said.
In its report, Mediaplusng.com noted that NOA Kebbi is working closely with emergency management agencies and River Basin Authorities to ensure affected communities receive timely information and support. Residents are strongly advised to monitor official updates and cooperate fully with local authorities on evacuation plans.
The agency stressed that the warning should not be taken lightly.
> “We appeal to all community leaders, residents, and stakeholders in the affected areas to take this warning with the utmost seriousness. Timely action now can avert disaster. We urge everyone to relocate to safer areas without delay,” Nazo added
