The Nigerian National Blindness and Visual Impairment 2025 Survey has revealed that cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in the country, accounting for about 43% of visual impairment cases. The report also estimates that 7.2% of Nigerians over 40 years old suffer from cataracts in one or both eyes.
According to Mediaplusng.com, this worrying trend prompted the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria to take urgent action. As part of its 50th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference held in Kano, the society conducted free cataract surgeries for 400 patients, alongside treatments for other eye conditions.
At the outreach, patients trooped to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital to receive screening and treatment. The medical intervention, facilitated by experts from across the country, was aimed at tackling the high rate of avoidable blindness in Nigeria.
The lead surgeon, Dr. Murtala Umar explained that cataract removal surgeries are critical in restoring vision and improving quality of life. Beneficiaries of the free medical outreach expressed gratitude for the initiative, saying the restoration of their sight will positively impact their families and economic wellbeing. Mediaplusng.com reports that society views sight restoration as a key driver of productivity and empowerment for affected individuals.
The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria says it will continue to champion initiatives that reduce visual impairment and enhance access to affordable eye care for Nigerians.
