Nigeria has lost one of its most respected security leaders as former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Ehigiator Arase, has died. He passed away at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja at the age of 68.
According to Mediaplusng.com, Arase served as the country’s 18th Inspector-General of Police before being appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC). Before rising to the top job, he led the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the police force’s top intelligence unit.
Born on June 21, 1956, in Edo State, Arase studied Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University and joined the Nigeria Police Force in December 1981. He later obtained a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos. His career saw him serve as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence, and Principal Staff Officer to former IGPs.
Mediaplusng.com reports that Arase also represented Nigeria on international duty, serving in Namibia under a United Nations peacekeeping mission. He retired from active service in June 2016 and was later appointed PSC Chairman by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023, a position he held until June 2024.
During his tenure, Arase was known for his reform-driven leadership. He introduced key initiatives such as the Intelligence Response Team, the Complaint Response Unit to address police misconduct,
