The Federal Government of Nigeria has rescued a young Nigerian woman, Mercy Oluwagbenga, after a viral video showed her crying out for help while trapped in Libya. The intervention came through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
According to Mediaplusng.com, Mercy was officially received at the NIDCOM headquarters in Abuja by the Commission’s Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who listened to her ordeal. Mercy used the moment to appeal to other Nigerian youths never to embark on irregular migration.
Narrating her story, Mercy said she dropped out of school at the age of 20 and was lured to Libya with promises of greener pastures to raise money for her sick mother. Instead, she ended up trapped in conditions she described as modern-day slavery.
Speaking further, Dabiri-Erewa commended Mercy for her resilience and survival. She noted that, unlike Mercy, many Nigerians have died in the desert or the Mediterranean Sea while trying to cross into Europe, while others remain missing. She stressed that irregular migration is a dangerous path that often ends in tragedy.
As reported by Mediaplusng.com, the NIDCOM boss cautioned Nigerian youths to avoid risky journeys and instead pursue safe and legal channels of travel. She emphasized that the government remains committed to protecting Nigerians abroad and raising awareness about the dangers of illegal migration.
