The 2025/2026 Legal Year in Plateau State opened in Jos with a renewed call for state police by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who also unveiled new security plans to tackle insecurity across the state.
According to Mediaplusng.com, Governor Mutfwang announced that his administration will recruit 1,450 new security personnel into the state’s Operation Rainbow. The governor explained that this move is aimed at strengthening community policing and enhancing security presence in rural and urban communities.
Mutfwang emphasized that the creation of state police remains the most practical step in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. He maintained that without local policing structures, the country would continue to struggle against violent crimes and communal clashes.
In a related development, Mediaplusng.com reports that Plateau State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Philemon Daffi, expressed concerns over the backlog of cases in the courts. He stressed the need for judicial reforms to ensure quicker dispensation of justice in the state.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Jos Branch, Leah Hassan, assured that the legal profession will continue to work with the judiciary in promoting the rule of law and ensuring speedy trials. She pledged the NBA’s commitment to defending justice and supporting measures that strengthen public confidence in the courts.
The event, attended by top government officials, judges, lawyers, and members of the legal community, was marked by the ceremonial cutting of a cake to usher in the new legal year.
Governor Mutfwang’s fresh call for state police reflects the growing demand among Nigerian leaders for constitutional reforms that will give states more control over their security architecture.
