The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two Brazil returnees who excreted 116 wraps of heroin and cocaine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. The suspects, identified as Ofoma Sunday (46) and Ukachukwu Frank Ikechukwu (55), were caught after body scans confirmed ingestion of illicit substances.
According to Mediaplusng.com, Ofoma was arrested on September 16, 2025, upon his arrival from Brazil on an Ethiopian Airlines flight. He later expelled 111 wraps of heroin weighing 1.45kg. Investigations led to the arrest of Nweke Jude Chukwudi, who was meant to oversee the recovery of the drugs in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos. In a separate arrest, Ukachukwu expelled five wraps of cocaine weighing 145 grams after confessing to smuggling nine wraps from Brazil.
In another operation, NDLEA operatives apprehended Ebere Theresa Okolonkwo, a businesswoman, on September 14, 2025, at Lagos airport. She attempted to board a Qatar Airways flight to Doha with 1.40kg of methamphetamine hidden in butt pad underwear. At the export shed, officers intercepted 40 wraps of meth (2.3kg) concealed in food items bound for Hong Kong. Similarly, a shipment to Europe was discovered with cocaine hidden inside seven phone chargers. Mediaplusng.com reports that multiple suspects are now in NDLEA custody.
The agency also recorded significant seizures outside Lagos. In Zamfara, operatives intercepted 1,099kg of cannabis skunk from a truck along Gummi-Daki Takwas road, while in Adamawa, over 233,800 tramadol pills were recovered in raids across Yola Additional arrests were made in Taraba, Edo, and Yobe states, where cannabis farms, opioids, and skunk were seized.
NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the operations, adding that the seizures highlight the agency’s determination to cut down trafficking networks. Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd.) praised the officers for their commitment, urging them to sustain the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaigns targeting schools, worship centres, and communities nationwide.
“These arrests and seizures are a clear warning to drug cartels that Nigeria is not a safe ground for their operations,” Marwa said.
