NUPRC Denies N8.41tn Oil Theft Claim, Reports 90% Drop in Crude Losses

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has refuted claims that Nigeria lost N8.41 trillion to crude oil theft between 2021 and 2025.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Commission explained in a statement that crude losses have actually dropped sharply over the last four years. Figures show that theft fell from about 102,900 barrels of oil per day in 2021, when NUPRC was created, to just 9,600 barrels per day in 2025. This, the Commission said, represents more than 90% reduction in losses.

NUPRC attributed the progress to stronger collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, oil operators, and other key stakeholders. The Commission noted that the joint efforts have stabilized production and helped Nigeria meet its OPEC quota.

Reporting further, Mediaplusng.com highlights that NUPRC has introduced several initiatives to boost output. These include Project 1 Million Barrels, metering audits, reactivation of shut-in wells, increasing rig activity, improving facility uptime, and creating alternative crude evacuation routes.

The Commission also revealed that Nigeria now has the technical capacity to produce over two million barrels of crude daily. It added that industry stakeholders—operators, service providers, rig owners, off-takers, and financiers, are being mobilized to unlock the country’s full production potential, building on an improved operating environment and greater community inclusion.
