The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed reports by some international platforms and online influencers alleging that terrorists in Nigeria are carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians. The government says the claims are false, misleading, and divisive.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s security challenges can not be reduced to a campaign against a single religious group. He explained that criminals and terrorists target all Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity. Both Muslims and Christians, as well as those without religious affiliation, have suffered from their attacks.
Idris noted that the federal government remains committed to defeating terrorism. Between May 2023 and February 2025, over 13,500 terrorists were neutralized, and nearly 10,000 hostages rescued across the country. In addition, the leaders of ANSARU, Nigeria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, were captured in a major operation.
The Minister stressed that Nigeria does not tolerate religious persecution. He pointed out that both the Armed Forces and the Police are led by Christians, showing the inclusivity of national leadership. He also highlighted Nigeria’s diversity, describing the country as home to one of the world’s largest Muslim populations and some of the biggest Christian congregations globally.
In the fight against terrorism, Nigeria has made progress in the courts. So far, more than 700 Boko Haram suspects have been convicted, with more trials ongoing. The military and police have also conducted court martials to ensure accountability within the security forces.
Idris added that Nigeria’s story is not one of genocide but one of resilience and peaceful coexistence. In March 2025, two Nigerian religious leaders, Rev. Dr. James Movel Wuye and Imam Dr. Muhammad Nurayn Ashafa received the Commonwealth Peace Prize for their work in promoting interfaith harmony.
The government has urged the international media and commentators to act responsibly, avoid sensationalism, and support Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism.
