The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has condemned the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery for what it describes as anti-worker actions.
According to the TUC, workers were allegedly sacked by the refinery for exercising their constitutional right to freedom of association and unionization. The umbrella body of workers says this action is unjust and violates Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution as well as International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions.
TUC Demands Immediate Action
The TUC has made the following demands from Dangote management:
Immediate and unconditional reinstatement of all affected workers.
A public apology with assurances that such victimization will not happen again.
An independent investigation involving the Ministry of Labour, ILO, and other stakeholders into the refinery’s labour practices.
Warning of Industrial Action
The TUC says it stands in full solidarity with PENGASSAN, its affiliate union, and the victimized workers. It has also placed all its affiliates on red alert, warning that a national industrial action will be declared if Dangote management fails to comply within a reasonable time.
Workers’ Rights Must Be Protected
The labour body insists that no corporation, no matter its size or wealth, should be allowed to trample on the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers.
The TUC concluded that it remains united and ready to act decisively in defense of workers and the Nigerian workforce.
