The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, says Nigeria’s Independence Day is not just a ceremonial date but a moment for deep reflection on the nation’s journey.
Speaking at the Independence Day event in Abuja, Akume notes that since October 1, 1960, Nigeria’s history has been marked by triumphs and challenges. He explains that the theme of this year’s celebration serves both as a reminder of past struggles and a charge to build a stronger future.
The SGF calls on Nigerians to set aside divisions and embrace unity as the foundation for national progress. He stresses that the country’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than conflict.
“Nigeria at 65 is still a work in progress,” Akume says. “But with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, there is assurance that better days lie ahead.”
He urges all citizens—young and old—to contribute positively to nation-building, emphasizing that the responsibility of building a better Nigeria rests on everyone.
As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, the call for unity, resilience, and collective effort remains stronger than ever.
