The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning of a possible strike if long-standing demands are not met.
The decision comes after ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held on Sunday at the University of Abuja.
In a statement signed by the union’s national president, Professor Chris Piwuna, ASUU accused the Federal Government of neglecting the university system and failing to address critical issues affecting tertiary education.
According to the notice, ASUU has given the government two weeks to take concrete action. If the issues remain unresolved, the union says it will first embark on a two-week warning strike before moving to a total and indefinite strike.
ASUU insists that the federal government has ignored previous agreements, leading to poor funding, unpaid allowances, and declining standards in public universities.
This fresh ultimatum raises concerns among students, parents, and stakeholders, who fear another disruption to the academic calendar.
The Federal Government is yet to officially respond to ASUU’s new strike threat.
