Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of destroying Nigeria’s early promise as a nation. He says Nigeria, once positioned to become the giant of Africa and a global economic powerhouse at independence, has been reduced to hardship and uncertainty by years of misrule.
Speaking on current national issues, Obi argues that the policies of the present administration have worsened poverty, with over 15 million Nigerians pushed below the poverty line in just its first year. According to him, while citizens struggle with little or no benefit from government, they are being burdened with what he describes as a brutal tax regime. He further condemns what he calls reckless borrowing that leaves ordinary Nigerians poorer, while leaders “feast as the people fast.” Mediaplusng.com reports that Obi insists this cycle of poor governance is unsustainable and must be addressed urgently.
On insecurity, Obi laments that Nigerians are increasingly unsafe, with billions of naira reportedly paid as ransom in recent years. He says this insecurity points to an absence of leadership and clear direction. However, Obi remains hopeful about Nigeria’s future. He stresses that with competent, compassionate, and people-centered leadership, the country can recover and thrive. Drawing examples from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and India, he argues that Nigeria has all it takes to bounce back. Mediaplusng.com notes that Obi continues to push for reforms that prioritize citizens’ welfare over political gains.
