The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, says one of the key goals of the 10th House is to make Nigeria’s elections less contentious, more democratic, and cost-effective.
Speaking during his welcome address to members of the House as plenary resumed, the Speaker said lawmakers are working to reduce the high cost of elections by promoting single-day voting and ensuring inclusive party primaries. According to him, reforms in the electoral process will strengthen democracy and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s political system.
Abbas also revealed that two important legislative items — the Reserved Seats Bill for Women and the State Police Bill — will be given top priority in the coming weeks. These, he noted, are part of the House’s commitment to equity, representation, and national security.
However, proceedings briefly turned tense when Hon. Obinna Aguocha attempted to raise a matter of privilege concerning a letter he had sent to the Speaker and President Bola Tinubu about the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu on terrorism charges. The lawmaker said he had not received any response from the Speaker’s office.
Despite Speaker Abbas’ appeal for him to step down the motion and follow proper communication channels, Aguocha stood his ground, insisting that he acted within the House rules. The Deputy Speaker later intervened, assuring that the issue would be properly presented before the House for consideration.
The House continues to focus on strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions through reforms and inclusive legislative processes.
