NEPZA Bans Strikes, Lockouts in Dangote Refinery and Other Free Trade Zones

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) says its law prohibits any form of industrial strike or lockout for ten years in Free Trade Zones across the country. Managing Director of NEPZA, Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, made this known in Abuja while reacting to recent disruptions caused by union activities at the Dangote Refinery.

Dr. Ogunyemi explains that Section 18(5) of the NEPZA Act provides a ten-year ban on strikes and lockouts once operations begin in any Free Zone. He says that although workers are free to form unions and engage in collective bargaining, all trade disputes must be handled by the Authority. He adds that the law aims to protect investments, ensure industrial peace, and maintain smooth operations in strategic projects like the Dangote Refinery.

The NEPZA boss expresses concern over the interference of external unions, especially following PENGASSAN’s recent protest against alleged staff dismissals at the refinery. He commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for intervening swiftly to de-escalate the crisis, describing it as a sign of strong leadership and a maturing democracy.
