The former Coordinator of the Tinubu Presidential Legal Team has dismissed claims circulating on social media linking the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), to the President’s legal team.
In a statement obtained by Mediaplusng.com, the former coordinator described the reports as false and misleading, aimed at causing unnecessary public confusion. He clarified that Prof. Amupitan was never a member of the Tinubu Presidential Legal Team and his name was not listed among the over 123 lawyers formally engaged in the assignment, including 60 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).
According to the statement, at no time during the legal process was Prof. Amupitan’s advice, opinion, or professional service sought or rendered. The coordinator challenged anyone spreading the misinformation to provide verifiable proof, adding that members of the public can apply for Certified True Copies of all legal documents filed on behalf of the President-Elect (as he then was) to confirm this position.
The statement, published by Mediaplusng.com, urged Nigerians to prioritize truth and national stability in public discourse. It condemned deliberate misinformation designed to stir division or undermine trust in democratic institutions.
The coordinator reaffirmed that President Tinubu acted within his constitutional powers in appointing Prof. Amupitan and that the Council of State duly approved the appointment. He called on citizens, leaders, and media professionals to reject false narratives and support the strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy.
“Let truth, not mischief, guide our national conversations,” he concluded.
