The House of Representatives has passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to partner with the Akwa Ibom State Government for the establishment and full realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport project.
This follows a motion jointly sponsored by all lawmakers from Akwa Ibom State and presented by Hon. Unyime Idem, who highlighted the urgent need for collaboration to fast-track the project. According to Mediaplusng.com, the lawmakers stressed that Nigeria’s limited investment in modern deep seaports like Ibom Deep Seaport has slowed the growth of intermodal transport, reduced the country’s participation in the blue economy, and weakened export and logistics competitiveness.
The House believes that the development of the Ibom Deep Seaport will help expand haulage networks, boost export capacity, attract foreign direct investments, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Lawmakers also note that the seaport will create thousands of jobs and enhance trade activities across the South-South region and beyond.
As reported by Mediaplusng.com, the House therefore calls on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation and related agencies, to work closely with the Akwa Ibom State Government to ensure the speedy implementation of the Ibom Deep Seaport project. The lawmakers emphasize that such collaboration will not only strengthen Nigeria’s maritime industry but also position the country as a major hub for global trade in West Africa.
