As calls for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, continue to gain attention, a group of citizens under the banner of the Nigeria First Project Initiative has advised Nigerians to ignore what it describes as a “politically motivated and dangerous” #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.
The group made the appeal in Katsina State, saying the planned protest poses a threat to Nigeria’s unity, peace, and security. According to the National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Hamza Umar Saulawa, the move to free Kanu is not in the best interest of the country.
Speaking at a press briefing tagged “Why It Is Dangerous to Release Nnamdi Kanu: An Appeal to Citizens,” Saulawa praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, boosting foreign reserves, stabilizing the exchange rate, and reforming the tax system.
He also commended the President for upholding the rule of law, stressing that Tinubu’s refusal to interfere in cases linked to terrorism and treasonable offenses shows his respect for judicial independence and national security.
Saulawa noted that Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021, faces serious charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony. He reminded Nigerians that the IPOB leader once jumped bail in 2017, after which violence escalated in parts of the Southeast due to inciting broadcasts attributed to him.
> “Any patriotic Nigerian should reject the call to join protests that could destabilize the nation,” Saulawa said. “Releasing Kanu at this time will only embolden those promoting hate, violence, and disunity,” he added.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the group also warned against plans by some activists to stage demonstrations in Abuja, including near Aso Rock Villa and the National Assembly. It urged security agencies to be alert to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Coup Rumours: A Threat to Democracy
The Nigeria First Project Initiative also addressed recent rumours of a possible coup in the country, describing them as part of a grand plan by some political actors to destabilize Nigeria’s democracy.
Saulawa stated that the Nigerian democracy remains strong after 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule. He described those spreading coup rumours as “enemies of progress” who want to reverse the nation’s democratic gains.
> “Nigeria’s democracy has come to stay,” he said. “No amount of threat or blackmail will derail it.”
He further praised President Tinubu for recently granting a Presidential Pardon to 175 Nigerians, describing the gesture as a sign of forgiveness and inclusiveness in nation-building.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, and progress, calling on Nigerians to stand firm against any attempts to divide the nation.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the group emphasized the need for responsible civic action and national unity, urging citizens to prioritize the country’s collective stability over individual or sectional interests.
