In what appears to be a major political move ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention, northern stakeholders of the party have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, for the position of National Chairman.
The endorsement reportedly comes after a closed-door meeting currently taking place at the Abuja residence of former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi. The meeting has drawn key PDP figures, including the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, as well as the Governors of Zamfara, Plateau, and Adamawa States.
Although the detailed agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, sources told Mediaplusng.com that the discussion centers on uniting northern leaders ahead of the party’s National Elective Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16. The stakeholders are said to be seeking a consensus candidate to strengthen internal unity and reposition the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who is also hosting the meeting, is one of the top contenders for the national chairmanship position. Other aspirants in the race include former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, and Tanimu Turaki, who is now believed to have gained significant support among northern delegates.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the endorsement of Turaki may signal a strategic alignment within the PDP’s northern bloc, as party leaders work to balance interests across regions. Political analysts believe this decision could play a key role in shaping the direction of the opposition party in the months ahead.
