The Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has reacted to the United States’ designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), describing it as a direct result of weak leadership and poor management of the nation’s resources.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Obi says the U.S. government’s decision and warning of possible military action should worry every Nigerian. According to him, the alarming level of insecurity and loss of lives across the country is a painful reflection of leadership failure.
“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with shocking loss of lives and property,” Obi writes. “According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed since May 2023. The continued, unprovoked killing of Nigerians is condemnable, and all efforts must be made to stop it,” he adds.
The former Anambra State governor notes that Nigeria’s current crisis could have been avoided with competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership. He blames what he describes as a lack of commitment, prudence, and patriotism by the APC-led government, saying such failures have worsened insecurity and poverty in the country.
While acknowledging that the insecurity challenge did not start with the current administration, Obi insists that the government must show stronger leadership and make better use of available resources to protect citizens.
He emphasizes that as two democratic nations, Nigeria and the United States share a long-standing partnership built on peace and regional stability. Obi, therefore, calls for constructive diplomatic engagement between both countries to tackle the worsening security concerns through cooperation and mutual understanding.
According to Mediaplusng.com, Obi’s remarks have stirred conversations on social media, with many Nigerians agreeing that mismanagement of public funds and weak governance are key factors driving insecurity The statement also highlights growing calls for transparency, accountability, and stronger policy actions to rebuild public trust and strengthen Nigeria’s international image.
