Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Belem, Brazil, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30). The global event, hosted in the capital city of Pará State at the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, focuses on driving real climate action and sustainable development.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the summit—convened by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in partnership with global stakeholders—brings together world leaders, development experts, and business executives under the theme “Climate Action and Implementation.” This year’s discussions focus on adaptation, biodiversity, forests, and climate justice, with a renewed commitment to protect vulnerable ecosystems and communities.
Vice President Shettima’s participation begins with the general plenary session, where he will deliver Nigeria’s address on climate action. He is also expected to attend the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, participate in a Climate and Nature Roundtable chaired by President Lula, and later join an Amazonian Cocktail Reception for Heads of Delegation.
As reported by Mediaplusng.com, COP30 marks a significant milestone—ten years after the historic Paris Agreement. The conference aims to strengthen global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C, push for more ambitious national climate commitments, and scale up climate financing to $1.3 trillion annually for developing countries by 2035.
The event reinforces Nigeria’s growing role in climate diplomacy and its commitment to sustainable solutions that protect people, nature, and future generations.
