NDDC to Provide Skills Training for Inmates in the Niger Delta

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced plans to support the Nigerian Correctional Service with skills training and empowerment programmes for inmates across custodial centres in the Niger Delta region.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, made this known during a courtesy visit by the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, to the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. Dr. Ogbuku explained that the initiative aims to help inmates gain productive skills that will prepare them for reintegration into society after their release.

He added that the Commission will explore ways to include inmates in its ongoing youth training and empowerment programmes. The NDDC boss further revealed that the Nigerian Correctional Service has already been incorporated into some of the Commission’s key initiatives, including Operation Light Up the Niger Delta and Free Medical Services—both designed to improve living conditions and promote social development in the region.

In his remarks, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, praised the NDDC for its developmental projects and its commitment to improving lives across the Niger Delta. He appealed for more collaboration in areas such as skills acquisition, education, and healthcare, emphasizing that such partnerships would go a long way in promoting rehabilitation and reducing recidivism among inmates.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the new partnership between the NDDC and the Correctional Service aligns with the Federal Government’s broader efforts to promote human capital development, rehabilitation, and reintegration as part of Nigeria’s justice reform agenda.
