The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has confronted some officers of the Nigerian Military over an alleged case of land grabbing at Gaduwa District in Abuja. The incident, which drew public attention, highlights the ongoing tension between the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and security agencies regarding land ownership and allocation in the nation’s capital.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the heated exchange occurred when Minister Wike questioned the presence of the officers on the disputed land. He stated that the military personnel were acting on impunity since the FCTA has no official record or legal document allocating the land to them. The Minister emphasized that his administration would not tolerate any form of unlawful occupation or abuse of authority, regardless of who is involved.
In response, the military officers insisted they were acting under directives given by a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (rtd), and therefore would not vacate the property. However, Mediaplusng.com reports that the FCT Minister maintained his stance, insisting that only the FCTA has the legal authority to allocate land within Abuja.
The confrontation underscores the growing challenge of land management in the Federal Capital Territory, where overlapping claims and unauthorized occupations have often led to disputes between government institutions and individuals.
As Wike continues his reform of the FCT land administration system, this development signals a renewed push for accountability, transparency, and proper documentation in land allocation across the territory.
