The Nigerian Senate has passed a resolution declaring kidnapping as a terrorist act, proposing that the Terrorism Act be amended to impose the maximum penalty of death for convicted kidnappers. Mediaplusng.com reports that this move aims to strengthen deterrence against the rising cases of abduction across the country.

Under the new provision, anyone found guilty of kidnapping will face the death penalty upon conviction. The Senate emphasized that this measure is part of broader efforts to protect citizens and curb insecurity nationwide.

According to Mediaplusng.com, lawmakers believe that equating kidnapping with terrorism sends a strong signal to criminal elements and reinforces the government’s zero-tolerance stance on abduction and related crimes.

The resolution also calls for strict enforcement and collaboration with security agencies to ensure kidnappers are swiftly brought to justice.
