President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomes Nigeria’s re-election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 term, describing it as a strong endorsement of the country’s rising maritime influence and commitment to global shipping standards. According to Mediaplusng.com, Nigeria returns to Category C of the IMO Council after a 14-year absence, following a successful vote at the IMO General Assembly in London on November 28.
President Tinubu says the victory shows the international community’s confidence in Nigeria’s efforts toward safety, security, environmental protection, and transparent maritime governance. He commends the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, along with officials of the ministry, NIMASA, and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for their strategic engagement and professionalism throughout the election process.
As Mediaplusng.com reports, the President says Nigeria’s new seat on the IMO Council aligns with his administration’s plan to develop the blue economy, expand maritime infrastructure, strengthen anti-piracy operations, and position Nigeria as a leading shipping hub in Africa. He assures global partners that Nigeria is ready to support safer seas, cleaner oceans, and more efficient maritime transport systems.
President Tinubu also thanks IMO member states for their support, pledging that Nigeria will justify the confidence placed in it through strong leadership and active contribution to international maritime goals.
