The Delta State Police Command arrests 43 suspects after hoodlums attempt to hijack New Year Eve celebrations across parts of Asaba metropolis, causing unrest and public disturbance.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the arrests follow a coordinated midnight patrol launched around 12:00 a.m. on January 1, 2026. The operation is led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, with the support of Divisional Police Officers, tactical units, and patrol teams deployed across major routes to protect residents and commuters during the festivities.
Police reports indicate that miscreants and street touts exploit the large crowds to block roads, engage in illegal car racing, reckless driving, and throw fireworks at members of the public. Some commuters are reportedly knocked down, while worshippers returning from crossover church services face intimidation as tyres are burned at strategic junctions to obstruct movement.
Mediaplusng.com gathered that the situation escalates when the hoodlums turn violent, attacking police patrol teams with stones and other dangerous objects. Officers respond promptly, applying lawful crowd-control measures to disperse the mob, restore calm, and prevent a breakdown of law and order across the state capital.
At the end of the operation, police arrest 43 suspects and recover several items, including 25 vehicles, eight tricycles, fireworks, hard drugs, and other offensive weapons. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, with plans to charge them to court upon the conclusion of inquiries.
The Delta State Police Command strongly condemns the actions, warning that any attempt to exploit festive periods to incite violence, obstruct roads, or attack security personnel will attract firm and lawful consequences.
Normalcy has since been restored across Asaba, with intensified patrols and continuous monitoring in place to prevent further disturbances. The police reassure residents of their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while urging the public to celebrate responsibly, obey the law, and report suspicious activities promptly.
