Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, visits survivors and families of victims of the recent boat mishap in Nguru Local Government Area that claims 29 lives. The governor describes the incident as a painful loss to affected families, the Nguru community, and the entire state.
Speaking through his deputy, Idi Barde-Gubana, during the sympathy visit, the state government expresses deep condolences and reassures residents of continued support, Mediaplusng.com reports. The deputy governor says the tragedy is a moment of grief for Yobe State and calls for collective prayers and caution in riverine activities.
As part of immediate relief measures, the Yobe State Government approves a total of N20 million as financial assistance. Each bereaved family receives N500,000, while every rescued victim gets N200,000. The government also provides food items to support the affected households and survivors.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the state delegation includes the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam-Wali; a member of the House of Representatives from the area, Tijjani Zanna-Zakariya; the Deputy Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Ya’u Dachia; and other top government officials from the zone.
Addressing community members, Deputy Governor Idi Barde-Gubana says the incident is an act of God and assures residents that the government is taking steps to prevent future occurrences. He announces plans to train all boat drivers in riverine communities on modern safety and navigation techniques.
The deputy governor also says the government will distribute life jackets to communities that rely heavily on water transport. He explains that the move aims to improve safety standards and reduce the risk of similar tragedies across riverine areas of the state.
He adds that the State Emergency Management Agency has been directed to provide food assistance to 52 victims affected by the boat mishap. According to him, the government remains committed to the welfare of citizens and will continue to respond swiftly to emergencies.
Residents of Nguru Local Government Area commend the state government for the timely visit and support, describing the intervention as a relief during a difficult period. Community leaders call for sustained safety awareness and enforcement of regulations on water transportation.
