The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party affirms the party’s unity and strategic direction following its meeting held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The meeting focuses on party stability, preparations for upcoming congresses, and recent political developments, including leadership issues and membership growth nationwide.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the meeting, convened in line with the Labour Party Constitution 2019 (as amended), is chaired by the National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman. Members of the NWC review field reports from the ongoing nationwide membership revalidation and registration exercise, as well as preparations for the party’s congresses and National Convention.

During deliberations, the NWC assesses the state of the party amid heightened political activities across the country. The committee reviews developments surrounding the exit of the party’s former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and considers its implications for the party’s future. Members describe the discussions as frank, wide-ranging, and focused on strengthening internal structures and ideology.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the NWC also reviews the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) press release issued on January 7, 2026. The commission’s statement reaffirms the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which rules that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman of the Labour Party has elapsed.

Following its deliberations, the NWC passes several resolutions. The party leadership formally wishes Mr. Peter Obi well in his future political pursuits and in his new political platform. The committee stresses that the Labour Party remains united, indivisible, and committed to building a Nigeria based on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance.

The NWC unanimously recognises Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party. Party leaders describe this decision as part of efforts to provide clear political leadership and strengthen cohesion within the party at the national level.

On the INEC press release, the NWC says it receives the statement with relief and clarity. The committee notes that the release simply restates the Supreme Court judgment that ends Julius Abure’s tenure as national chairman. Based on this, the Labour Party urges INEC to fully recognise Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary respectively, in line with the law and existing court rulings.

The NWC also thanks party members and Nigerians for their sustained interest and confidence in the Labour Party. It calls on citizens to actively participate in the ongoing membership revalidation and registration exercise, noting that the party aims to build a nationwide membership strength of at least 10 million members.

In addition, the committee reaffirms that all party congresses and the forthcoming National Convention will hold as scheduled. It assures members that these processes will strictly follow the provisions of the party constitution, with a commitment to transparency, credibility, and inclusiveness at all levels.

The NWC notes with optimism the growing number of Nigerians expressing interest in contesting elective offices on the platform of the Labour Party. According to the committee, this development reflects increasing public trust in the party as a viable alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The communiqué is signed by the National Secretary of the Labour Party, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, and dated January 7, 2026.
