Rivers Impeachment Crisis Deepens as Two More Lawmakers Withdraw Support

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The impeachment push against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, suffers another major setback as two additional members of the State House of Assembly withdraw their support for the process and call for dialogue to resolve the political crisis.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, announce their decision less than 48 hours after two other legislators publicly stepped away from the impeachment move.

Both lawmakers acknowledge that there may be constitutional concerns surrounding the actions of the governor and his deputy. However, they say their change of position follows sustained interventions by respected leaders, elders, and political stakeholders who appeal for restraint in the interest of peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State.

Mediaplusng.com reports that with the latest withdrawals, four out of the 26 lawmakers who initially endorsed the notice of alleged gross misconduct have now distanced themselves from the impeachment process. The development signals growing internal resistance within the Assembly and strengthens calls for political dialogue rather than confrontation.

Political observers say the withdrawals expose widening cracks within the House and reflect increasing concern over the impact of prolonged political tension on governance, security, and economic activities in the state. Many stakeholders fear that impeachment proceedings could further polarise the polity and distract from pressing developmental issues.

The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to reconvene plenary on January 15, 2026, as attention turns to how the leadership of the House will manage the deepening divisions among lawmakers. There is growing anticipation over whether the impeachment process will continue or be suspended to allow room for negotiations.

Earlier, the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo, who represents Omuma Constituency, alongside Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, publicly announced their withdrawal from the impeachment process during a press briefing in Port Harcourt. Both lawmakers urge their colleagues to prioritise peace and constitutional dialogue.

They warn that sustained political conflict could weaken institutions, disrupt governance, and undermine public confidence in democratic processes. The lawmakers also stress the need for responsible leadership at a time when Rivers State faces critical economic and social challenges.

Stakeholders across the state, including traditional rulers, civil society groups, and political leaders, continue to call for reconciliation between the executive and the legislature. Many insist that political disagreements should be resolved through consultation and adherence to democratic norms rather than drastic legislative actions.

As the situation unfolds, residents of Rivers State watch closely, hoping that political leaders will choose dialogue over division. The coming days are expected to be decisive in determining whether the impeachment effort gains renewed momentum or gives way to a negotiated political settlement.
