Stakeholders, ward representatives, and political leaders in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State declare strong support for the Rivers State House of Assembly and its Majority Leader, Major Jack, amid growing debate over the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the endorsement follows calls from some groups demanding the recall of lawmakers involved in the impeachment process. In response, leaders from across the seventeen wards in Akuku-Toru convene a meeting and pass a vote of confidence on Major Jack, who represents Akuku-Toru Constituency One and sponsors the impeachment motion before the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly.
The meeting, held at the council headquarters in Abonnema, attracts a large crowd of councillors, ward leaders, party officials, and community stakeholders cutting across party lines. Participants insist that constituents are adequately consulted and fully briefed on the impeachment process, stressing that the lawmakers are acting in line with the wishes of the people.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the council chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, Aboiya-aa Bob-Fubara, addresses the gathering and condemns calls for the recall of Assembly members. He warns that such actions do not reflect the position or interest of the people of Akuku-Toru, describing the impeachment process as a constitutional responsibility of the legislature.
The chairman explains that the Assembly members from the area enjoy the confidence and backing of their constituents. He adds that attempts to intimidate or discredit lawmakers undermine democratic principles and the rule of law.
Following his remarks, other stakeholders, including ward representatives and party executives, take turns to reaffirm their support for Major Jack and the impeachment process. They emphasize that their position is driven by community interest rather than political loyalty.
Leaders of both major political parties in the local government echo similar sentiments. Speaking after the meeting, the chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akuku-Toru say their support for the Assembly members goes beyond party affiliation.
The APC Chairman, Prince Obene, states that the lawmakers’ actions reflect the broader interest of Rivers people and should not be politicized. He notes that legislative oversight and accountability remain essential pillars of democracy.
Similarly, the PDP Chairman in the local government, Adokiye Major Jack, says the impeachment process should be allowed to follow due process without pressure or threats. He insists that lawmakers must be free to perform their constitutional duties without fear of recall or intimidation.
Recall that earlier, groups including the Ijaw Youth Council and members of the African Democratic Congress call on constituents to begin a recall process against members of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly over the impeachment move against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Ordu.
Despite the backlash, the Assembly signals determination to continue the process. In a statement signed by the House Committee Chairman on Information, Inemi George, the Assembly says a majority of members resolve to proceed with the impeachment.
The statement lists alleged constitutional and financial breaches, including the non-presentation of the 2026 budget, unappropriated expenditure, and claims that the Assembly and the judiciary suffer funding deprivation. It also confirms that impeachment notices are duly served on the governor and his deputy.
However, recent political developments indicate cracks within the Assembly, as reports emerge that four lawmakers withdraw support for the impeachment move. This development introduces a new layer of uncertainty into the ongoing political process.
Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara calls for calm among residents and political actors. He urges Rivers people to remain peaceful and expresses confidence that the situation will be resolved, placing his trust in God and due process.
As events continue to unfold, political observers anticipate further negotiations, alignments, and legal battles. With strong backing from Akuku-Toru stakeholders and shifting dynamics within the Assembly, the Rivers State impeachment process remains fluid, with more political intrigue expected in the coming days.
