Men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command today fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters demonstrating against ongoing demolitions in Lagos, particularly in Makoko and Iyana-Oworoonsoki.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the protest, organised by the Coalition Against Demolition, Forced Eviction, Land Grabbing, and Displacement in Lagos, was in solidarity with victims of demolitions across the state, including Otumara and Owode-Onirin. The leader of the protesters, popularly known as Comrade Soweto, and several others were arrested, while numerous demonstrators sustained injuries during the clash.

Protesters had gathered under Ikeja Bridge along Awolowo Road and marched to Alausa, Lagos State Secretariat, chanting solidarity songs and displaying banners with messages such as: “Lagos is not for the rich alone” and “End forced eviction”.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the confrontation escalated outside the Lagos State House of Assembly, forcing workers, passers-by, and demonstrators to flee for safety. Police, supported by the Lagos State Taskforce, blocked access to the secretariat and fired several tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.

All entrances and exits to the secretariat were closed to prevent intrusion, while security personnel continued patrolling the area to maintain order. Blood stains were visible on the ground, confirming injuries, though organizers have not released an official casualty figure.

Several protesters told journalists that police tear gas caused multiple injuries, and some were treated on-site. By 3:00 pm, security forces remained stationed around the area to ensure peace and prevent further escalation.
