The Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin City today dismisses the petition challenging the outcome of the Edo Central Senatorial by-election.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Prince Joe Okojie, against the election of Joseph Ikpea, winner of the August 16, 2025 by-election, is struck out for lacking merit. The tribunal notes that the petitioners failed to substantiate their claims, while witness testimonies were inconsistent and insufficient.
The tribunal also awards a cost of ₦1 million against the petitioners in favour of each respondent, affirming the validity of the by-election results. Mediaplusng.com reports that the by-election was conducted to fill the vacant seat left by Senator Monday Okpebholo, who was elected Governor of Edo State.
Counsel to the petitioners could not be reached for comments, while representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the respondents welcomed the tribunal’s ruling.
The dismissal underscores the tribunal’s commitment to upholding credible elections and ensuring legal challenges meet evidentiary standards before succeeding.
The outcome allows Joseph Ikpea to assume full legislative duties in the Senate, representing Edo Central, while consolidating confidence in the state’s electoral process ahead of future elections.
Lawyers and political observers note that the ruling may discourage frivolous petitions and strengthen the integrity of the electoral system in Edo State.
With this decision, Edo Central constituents can expect uninterrupted representation and legislative advocacy in the National Assembly, ensuring that governance and development initiatives continue without legal disputes.
The tribunal’s judgment is final, reinforcing the principle that election petitions must be based on credible evidence and sound legal arguments to be entertained in court.
