The Edo State Government begins the restitution of 2,950 plots of land to 1,550 residents affected by the 2022 property demolition in Oke-Oroma Community, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area. The move marks a major step toward resolving the long-standing land dispute and restoring confidence in government intervention.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the restitution process is being carried out through the Edo State Ministry of Lands and Housing, which has started issuing official offer letters to verified and eligible landowners. The exercise, which commenced last week, signals the formal return of lands previously taken during the demolition exercise.

The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Yakubu Musa, says the initiative reflects the commitment of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration to justice, fairness, and inclusive governance. He explains that the government carefully reviewed the dispute, verified ownership claims, and designed a transparent process to ensure that genuine victims are adequately compensated.

Mediaplusng.com reports that affected residents describe the development as a long-awaited relief after years of uncertainty, financial loss, and emotional distress. Many landowners say the return of their plots offers them a fresh opportunity to rebuild their lives and reinvest in their community.

According to the Ministry, a total of 1,550 beneficiaries are captured in the first phase of the restitution, with each recipient allocated plots equivalent to their verified losses. Officials say the exercise follows detailed documentation, field verification, and engagement with community stakeholders to prevent abuse of the process.

Speaking during the issuance of offer letters, Commissioner Yakubu Musa notes that the government is determined to correct past wrongs while strengthening land administration in the state. He says the Okpebholo administration prioritises peaceful dispute resolution and the protection of citizens’ property rights.

Beneficiaries, including landowners Benjamin Adebayo and Kennedy Efe, commend the state government for listening to their appeals and acting decisively. They say the decision restores hope and renews trust between the government and the people of Oke-Oroma Community.

Residents also acknowledge that the restitution process has helped to ease tensions in the area, which had lingered since the demolition exercise. Community leaders describe the move as a confidence-building measure capable of preventing future land-related conflicts.

The Edo State Government says the land return initiative aligns with its broader development agenda, which emphasises fairness, urban planning, and responsible land use. Officials stress that while the state will continue to enforce development regulations, such actions will always follow due process and humane considerations.

Authorities further assure that lessons learned from the Oke-Oroma dispute will guide future urban development policies. The government says it is strengthening engagement with communities, landowners, and developers to reduce disputes and promote orderly growth.

As the restitution exercise continues, the Edo State Government urges beneficiaries to comply with planning regulations and legal requirements in future developments. Officials say this approach will help balance development needs with the rights and welfare of residents.

The return of 2,950 plots to Oke-Oroma victims stands as one of the most significant restitution efforts in recent years, reinforcing the state’s pledge to accountable leadership, social justice, and sustainable development.
