The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Christopher Maikalangu, wins re-election as Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) following the conclusion of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Chairmanship polls.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announces the results in the early hours of Sunday after collation is completed at the INEC Area Office in Karu, Abuja, at about 4:30 a.m., bringing the closely watched grassroots election to a formal conclusion.

The AMAC Collation Officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, declares Maikalangu duly elected after securing 40,295 votes out of a total 62,861 valid votes cast in the election. He states that the APC candidate meets all constitutional and legal requirements and scores the highest number of lawful votes.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finishes second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polls 3,398 votes. The total votes cast stand at 65,197, with 2,336 rejected votes recorded during the exercise.

INEC further discloses that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters, while 65,676 voters are accredited for the election. The figures reflect a modest turnout compared to the total voter register, a trend political analysts describe as common in local government elections.

According to Mediaplusng.com, Prof. Abue formally declares: “That Christopher Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.” The announcement is greeted with cheers from party supporters present at the collation centre.

A breakdown of results across political parties shows varied performance among the 16 parties that contest the chairmanship seat. Accord records 403 votes, Action Alliance 108 votes, Action Democratic Party 588 votes, and All Progressives Grand Alliance 1,111 votes.

Other parties post the following results: Allied Peoples Movement 122 votes, Action Peoples Party 32 votes, Boot Party 43 votes, New Nigeria Peoples Party 1,694 votes, National Rescue Movement 73 votes, Peoples Redemption Party 90 votes, Social Democratic Party 2,185 votes, Young Progressives Party 421 votes, and Zenith Labour Party 189 votes.

Observers note that Maikalangu’s re-election strengthens the APC’s foothold in the nation’s capital at the grassroots level. They add that continuity in leadership may influence policy implementation, infrastructure delivery, and local administrative reforms within AMAC.

Political stakeholders also emphasize that the credibility of area council elections plays a significant role in shaping public confidence in Nigeria’s broader democratic system, especially as preparations gradually begin for future national contests.

With the declaration concluded and certificates of return expected to follow, attention now shifts to governance priorities for the second term. Residents of AMAC anticipate renewed focus on service delivery, community development, and inclusive local administration as the newly returned chairman prepares to continue his mandate.
