The death toll from the terror attack on Binnari village in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State has risen to 40, according to Amnesty International Nigeria.
The attack occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, when armed men reportedly invaded the community, killing residents and setting homes, shops, food supplies and motorcycles ablaze.
Taraba State Police spokesperson, Victor Mshelizah, earlier confirmed that 10 people were killed, adding that police operatives had been deployed to restore order.
However, Amnesty International says 40 people have been killed, with additional bodies reportedly being discovered. Other sources have reported higher figures, while several residents remain missing.
The rights organisation condemned the killings, describing the attack as a violation of the sanctity of human life. It called for an impartial investigation, justice for the victims and adequate compensation for survivors.
Amnesty International also accused Nigerian authorities of failing to adequately protect rural communities from repeated attacks, warning that the failure to prosecute suspected perpetrators could encourage further violence.
The incident adds to growing security concerns in Taraba State, where communities have faced attacks linked to banditry, communal clashes and farmer-herder conflicts.
