n a bold move to enforce environmental laws, the Lagos State Government has arrested and arraigned five men for illegally dumping waste into a canal along the Igando-Iba Road Link Bridge.
The suspects — identified as Quassim Jamiu (44, Kwara State), Ayo Jamiu (18, Kwara State), Alexander Innocent (40, Akwa Ibom), Oparinde Taiwo (55, Ogun State), and Moses Adelowokan (76, Osun State) — were caught in the act by operatives from the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) unit and security officers. They were using a lorry to offload the refuse when they were intercepted.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the men were arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Oshodi and have since been remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending further legal action.
This crackdown comes just 48 hours after the state government issued a stern warning to residents and waste violators, urging compliance with environmental regulations or face prosecution.
Mr. Wahab emphasized that the government is fully committed to ending indiscriminate refuse disposal in Lagos. He warned that offenders risk up to three months in jail or a fine of ₦250,000 if caught.
He also reminded residents that the state has deployed PSP waste operators across all wards to provide proper waste collection services. He urged Lagosians to make use of these approved channels to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.
