Inside VP Shettima’s Humble Leadership: A Model of Service in Power

Vice President Kashim Shettima’s leadership goes beyond politics and protocol it’s deeply rooted in humility, service, and loyalty to the Renewed Hope Agenda. Known for his administrative competence and remarkable work ethic, Shettima exemplifies a style of leadership that values people over power.

Having served as governor of Borno State for eight years, Shettima could easily have embraced a culture of entitlement. Instead, he chooses humility. Whether on official trips or private engagements, his interactions reflect respect for both the high and the lowly. Those who work closely with him often describe each day as a lesson in emotional intelligence and grounded leadership.

During the recent Eid Mubarak holiday in Maiduguri, Shettima’s modest residence became a symbol of open-door leadership. When his security team initially barred visitors due to protocol, Shettima personally intervened, instructing in Hausa: “Open the gates. Let everyone in.” His living room quickly filled, and the Vice President prayed and shared a meal with the crowd—an act of rare openness among Nigeria’s political class.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Shettima extended Nigerian hospitality to his team by ensuring they were well-fed and comfortable, even in a foreign land. His warmth made aides feel at home, reaffirming that empathy has no borders.

During the Christmas season, when some Christian staff reported for duty, Shettima encouraged them to go home and spend time with their families. “Come back after the holidays. If anything urgent arises, I’ll call,” he said. It was a gesture that spoke volumes about his respect for religious and personal boundaries.

Recently, Shettima postponed his own departure from Abuja’s Presidential Wing to respectfully receive former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The Vice President moved his convoy aside and waited to greet the elder statesman, demonstrating reverence often lacking in political corridors. Their friendly exchange reflected Shettima’s commitment to unity and civility in governance.

Shettima’s unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu underscores his loyalty and vision. To those hoping for division within the presidency, the Vice President’s message remains clear: “Let’s stay focused. This president must succeed. Ignore distractions. Support the mission.”

In an age where power often fosters arrogance, Vice President Shettima’s leadership style offers a refreshing contrast. His humility, respect for others, and loyalty to national development make him a unique figure in Nigerian politics. As the Tinubu administration pushes forward, Shettima continues to lead by example reminding Nigerians that true leadership starts with humility.
