Kebbi Government Begins Drainage Evacuation to Prevent Flooding

The Kebbi State Government has started clearing and evacuating drainage channels in key areas to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

The Commissioner for Urban Development, Hon. Hayatu Bawa, made this known in a statement released in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

According to him, Governor Nasir Idris approved the exercise to reduce the risk of flood disasters across the state. Bawa appreciated the governor for providing full support and funding to ensure the success of the project.

He explained that the aim is to remove dirt and blockages from waterways to allow free flow of rainwater, preventing possible overflows and flood incidents.

“We have started clearing drainages to ensure smooth water passage during rainfall. This will help reduce the chances of flooding,” he said.

The commissioner urged residents to avoid building structures on waterways and stop dumping waste in drains. He emphasized that such actions contribute to flooding and environmental hazards.

Bawa also advised people living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer, higher ground to protect lives and property.

The Kebbi government says it remains committed to taking proactive steps to safeguard communities from flood disasters during the rainy season.
