The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, has confirmed that the Court of Appeal sitting in Akure has upheld the nullification of the 2022 local government elections conducted under the previous administration.
In a statement released on Friday, Abioye explained that the appellate court’s verdict makes it clear that the beneficiaries of the 2022 election cannot claim any legitimate political office, as the election was declared null and void.
Abioye emphasized that when OSSIEC, under his leadership, began the process of conducting the 2025 local government elections, all council seats were constitutionally vacant. He noted that OSSIEC followed due process, issued timely election notices, and fully complied with electoral laws.
However, he decried what he called “deliberate manipulation” by some political actors who falsely claimed reinstatement of previous officeholders and declared there was “no vacancy” in the councils. According to him, this narrative was supported by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, which led to the sealing of the OSSIEC office by police on the eve of the election.
“Despite harassment, threats, and attempts to stop the election, we stayed alert and proactive. By God’s grace, we implemented strategic measures and the February 22nd election was held peacefully. Winners emerged and were issued certificates of return,” he said.
The OSSIEC chairman also criticized the disregard for valid court judgments that affirmed the existence of council vacancies and authorized OSSIEC to proceed with elections. He described the latest Court of Appeal ruling as a vindication of the Commission’s commitment to the rule of law.
Abioye concluded by stating that the only legitimate local government officials in Osun State are those elected on February 22, 2025. He issued a stern warning to all individuals and institutions: “Dealing with any other group claiming to represent the councils is not only illegal but poses a serious risk. This is a public notice—only those sworn in after the 2025 elections are recognized by law.”
