Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has been officially appointed as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. This leadership transition was confirmed at the 67th Ordinary Session of the regional bloc, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria.
President Bio takes over from Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose tenure as ECOWAS Chairman has now come to an end after serving for two terms.
The announcement puts to rest earlier speculation that Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had been elected to lead the West African regional body during a closed-door meeting before the main session.
President Bio’s emergence signals a new phase for ECOWAS as the region continues to tackle critical issues around peace, economic integration, and democratic stability.
