A tragic road accident in Ibadan has claimed five lives, following a multiple-vehicle collision that occurred Tuesday morning around the Sanyo area along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Oyo State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo State Command, confirmed the incident in an official statement, revealing that the crash involved seven vehicles, including articulated trucks, commercial Micra taxis, and private cars. The accident, which happened around 8:00 AM, resulted in the deaths of three women and two men.
According to the FRSC Public Education Officer, Mr. Mayowa Odewo, the crash was triggered when a trailer attempting to reverse out of an abandoned filling station was rear-ended by another trailer. The impact caused a chain reaction, as other vehicles collided in quick succession, crushing several smaller cars.
Eyewitnesses reported that one of the Micra taxis was completely flattened, instantly killing the driver and three passengers. A total of five individuals lost their lives, while one person sustained critical injuries and five others suffered minor injuries.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, with the deceased transported to Adeoyo Hospital and the injured receiving treatment at the same facility. The damaged vehicles were towed to the Sanyo Police Station for further investigation.
Traffic congestion caused by the crash has been gradually cleared with the help of FRSC personnel, traffic officers, and other security agencies, restoring movement along the affected section of the expressway.
The FRSC is once again urging all drivers, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to adhere strictly to road safety regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
