Ibadan Court Convicts TikTok Influencers for Abusing Naira Notes

Two social media influencers, Bukola Arike Rufai and Abdulateef Ayinde Jimoh, have been convicted by the Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for abusing the Nigerian currency.

Presiding over the case, Justice Uche Agomoh found the duo guilty of currency mutilation, following a charge filed by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the offence involved trampling on and spraying naira notes—an act prohibited by Nigerian law.

The EFCC charged the defendants under Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which makes it an offence to tamper with naira notes. The incident took place on September 25, 2024, and came to public attention after the duo posted a viral TikTok video of themselves spraying and stepping on naira notes during a social event.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to the one-count charge. The prosecution, led by Lanre Suleiman, presented video evidence and urged the court to convict them. Their defence counsel, O.D. Ajadi, appealed for leniency, noting that the accused were first-time offenders and had shown remorse.

Justice Agomoh convicted them and imposed a ₦50,000 fine each in lieu of a custodial sentence.

This conviction adds to ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to curb the abuse of naira notes, especially among celebrities and influencers who often flaunt cash in public or online spaces.
